UN Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a global call to action to:

  • End poverty
  • Protect the planet
  • Improve political and economic stability globally

Through 17 commitments and 169 targets, the goals seek to drive global action across social, environmental and economic development issues through 2030.

Argo Group recognizes the importance of these goals but is also very aware that as a medium-size specialty insurer, our ability to influence them directly is limited. We therefore have chosen to focus our ESG program on three specific SDGs where we believe we can have the biggest impact through our business activities, investments and community programs.

These are also most closely aligned to our corporate mission, “We help businesses stay in business.”

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Our core mission of protecting clients and supporting their resilience is both relevant and a priority for Argo Group. We provide protection for coastal cities and against inland flood risks, as well as support the development of smart cities.

SDG13: Climate Action
As a founding member of ClimateWise, Argo Group is focused on better understanding and modeling climate risks in order to tailor solutions to changing needs. We are also actively reviewing the impact of our investment portfolio since joining the UN Principles for Responsible Investment.

SDG5: Gender Equality
Through its Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Policy and the establishment of Employee Resource Groups (ERG), Argo Group is committed to addressing equality of opportunity for our employees and the communities in which we operate.

SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
We have a strong corporate governance framework in place that external ESG rating agencies have recognized. We are committed to listening to what employees want and monitor and regularly measure the pulse of employee satisfaction and engagement.
