Argo Surety Joins School Supply Drive in Houston

Students affected by Hurricane Harvey received backpacks filled with supplies.

Argo Surety employees spared no time this summer raising money to provide backpacks filled with school supplies for students at two Houston schools.

“We met our goal in an hour or two,” said Lauren Berliski, executive assistant to Argo Surety President Joshua C. Betz. “In less than 30 minutes, we were halfway there.”

Forty-five Argo Surety employees surpassed their fundraising goal and donated about $2,000 – enough to fill 120 backpacks for students at Bruce Elementary and Edison Middle schools in the Houston Independent School District. The original goal was 100 completed backpacks, Berliski said.

Echoes of Harvey

Distribution partner Aon Risk Services Southwest, Inc., of Houston spearheaded the back-to-school backpack and supplies drive, and invited Argo Surety to join alongside area companies that donate to schools in need. Argo Surety eagerly accepted, Betz said, and he noted that both schools receiving supplies have students who were affected by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017.

“It was an easy ‘yes,’ for us to partner with them,” Betz said.

The Surety team, Argo Group and many of its agents, reinsurers and brokers provided disaster relief to those affected by Hurricane Harvey, and the desire to continue helping the community remains in the wake of the catastrophe, Betz said.

“We continue to look for ways to help the areas most impacted by the floods, which also hurt those with the fewest resources,” he said.

Companies that donate to schools: Argo’s culture of giving back

During the back-to-school drive, a conference room at Argo Surety overflowed with markers, rulers, folders, binders, crayons and other must-haves for the classroom. Berliski made sure to buy backpacks in a rainbow of colors so students would have the chance to choose their favorite.

“We took over one of the conference rooms here in Houston and created an assembly line and packed them,” she said. “It was nice to be able to give back and help them out.”

Serving others underscores the value and meaning of the work done daily at Argo Surety, Betz said.

“While many people believe you come to work every day to make a living, I find that one of the greatest fulfillments for me and our team is the opportunities that our work affords us to give back to others,” he said. “When we are able to serve others as a team, this further drives our appreciation for the work we are doing every day.”
