Argo Group Donations Benefit Community Youth Organizations

Dozens of kids in Bermuda and Newport, Rhode Island, got hands-on sailing experiences during the Argo Group Gold Cup and Volvo Ocean Race events.

Argo Group is the title sponsor of the Argo Group Gold Cup match racing series held in Hamilton Harbour, Bermuda. The company sponsored spots in the event’s Pro-Am (professional-amateur) regatta for kids from the Endeavour Community Sailing Program – a youth education and community sailing initiative that uses science, technology, engineering, arts and math activities to foster students’ interest in those areas and the sport of sailing.

“Captain” Calvin White and his peers’ sailing education and dedication to the program earned them invitations to participate – quite an achievement for a group of middle school students.

Calvin raced with the U.S. One Sailing Team, which went on to win the 68th Argo Group Gold Cup.

“He said it was the best day of his life,” said Argo Group employee Jennifer Edwards, who sailed alongside Calvin during the Pro-Am event.

“Before the race, we brought the kids up to the Gold Cup lounge, where they got to have lunch and meet the sailors,” said Gary Grose, group producer management and marketing leader for Argo Group. “Everyone seemed to love it.”

After the regatta, Argo Group presented Endeavour with a $5,000 donation.

“Through the Argo Group Gold Cup, we continue to partner with organizations like Endeavour who share our commitment to innovation, teamwork and sustainability,” said Grose.

Argo helps Newport kids connect to sailing community.

Newport, Rhode Island, has a long sailing history – one that many children in the area know little about. Sail Newport, home to New England’s largest public sailing center and a youth sailing program serving hundreds of kids each season, works to change that.

Argo Group worked with the organization to invite more than 20 children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County to participate in activities during the local stop of the Volvo Ocean Race. Argo sponsors the Vestas 11th Hour Racing team.

“I doubt most of those kids have ever been out on the water or on a boat to see a race,” Grose said. “It was a big opportunity for them to get up close and see everything.”

Grose said it’s important for Argo to share its sponsorship message (no risk, no reward) and commitments (innovation, teamwork, sustainability) with future generations.

“It was a fun, rambunctious time,” he said. “We had Nic Douglass with us, a sailor-turned-communications pro. She hung out with the kids, and they loved that she is from Australia.”

The group visited the Vestas base to learn about the team’s sustainability work and got a taste of what it’s like on the boat by working a crank, wearing a virtual-reality headset and visiting with team member Stacey Jackson. They also visited the One Ocean Exploration Zone in the race village to learn about ocean and marine life, sustainability and innovations in boat styles.

After the events of the day, Argo Group presented Sail Newport with a $10,000 donation.

“We want to support organizations in need,” Grose said. “Giving back is an important part of our culture.”
